Eaglesoft 16 is shipping
For Eaglesoft users, it's that time of year again. The newest version of their software, 16, is being shipped. There are a few things we know at this point:
- We've been told by Eaglesoft that they are shipping about 1000 copies per week, and that the shipping is being done alphabetically by first name (I'm wondering if the tech I got this info from mis-spoke).
- Eaglesoft 16 is a major version upgrade with lots of changes to the software. There is a new line-item accounting model, some database tweaks, and lots of other stuff too. Be sure to read the information packet they send prior to doing the upgrade.
- The minimum memory specifications are now 2 gig of RAM for servers. We ran across one customer that only had 1 gig...so we had to push back the install until the server's memory could be upgraded.
- We were also told by Patterson support that the database upgrade takes from 3-11 hours...and that's on a modern server with all the memory maxed out. Although we were skeptical, it turned out to be true. The customer whose memory we upgraded to 4 gig had a 1 gigabyte database and the database upgrade alone took 4 1/2 hours to complete. Another two hours to upgarde their 17 other computers and the project was complete.
PERHAPS MOST IMPORTANTLY...
The 16 update changes the actual database file name. This may seem insignificant, but unless we account for that change in your backup, you will not get a good backup at any time after your 16 upgrade unless someone catches it. So....it is imperitive that if you use our backup service, and you want to upgrade to 16 soon, that you let us handle it for you.
So, for these reasons, do not count on your Eaglesoft 16 upgrade being a casual over-lunch-hour experience. It should be planned and and scheduled in advance.
